One of America's most important African American painters, Johnson is now being recognized as a major figure in twentieth-century American art. William H. Johnsons childhood in rural South Carolina provided a wellspring of imagery as he began painting the history and spirit of the African American experience. He later relocated to New York where he was influence by the excitement of colorful Harlem life. His unique style developed in the 1930s and 40s, bringing together his combined interests in modernism and African American culture.
